Originally a Minnesota girl, Carolyn Hall has lived in San Francisco since the early 60s. In 1994, after a checkered career that included histology, mutual funds, advertising, and child-rearing, she quit her day job as a graphic designer and copy editor to take up creative writing primarily memoir and fiction. Two years ago a friend introduced her to haiku. Bemused, but intrigued, she went to the bookstore and bought everything with "haiku" in its title. Suddenly the flora and fauna so familiar from walks around Stow Lake looked utterly fresh and new. Carolyn has since become totally addicted to this heightened sense of awareness an addiction she has no desire to break. Carolyn is Associate Editor of Mariposa, the membership journal of the Haiku Poets of Northern California. Carolyn's poems have received prizes or honorable mentions in the Gerald Brady Senryu Contest, HPNC Rengay Contest, 2001 Haiku Calendar Contest, San Francisco International Haiku Contest, HEA Annual Haiku Contest (humorous category), the NLAPW Haiku Contest, the Penumbra Haiku Competition, the JSWE contest, and The Heron's Nest Valentine Awards. Carolyn's poetry has appeared in The Red Moon Anthology (1999, 2000, 2001); stone frog: American Haibun & Haiga, Volume 2; A New Resonance: Emerging Voices in English-Language Haiku, Volume 2; Floating Dreams (Two Autumns Press, 2001); and The Cancer Poetry Project Book, Fairview Press (2001). Previous credits include: Acorn, Blithe Spirit, Chiyo's Corner, Frogpond, Geppo, haijinx, The Heron's Nest, Hummingbird, Mariposa, Modern Haiku, Poetry In The Light, RAW NerVZ, South by Southeast, the San Francisco Bay Guardian and others. haiku: "backyard renovation" - previously unpublished haiku: "autumn morning" haiku: "wilderness trail" - The Heron's Nest II:11 (2000) haiku: "bamboo gardens" - South by Southeast VII:2 (2000)
